Young Strider in the Making

Hi all

One of my daughters decided to come running with me today, she is really keen, shes only 13, 14 in December. We did a mile, had a 3 min walk then ran back another mile. Although Im really pleased she wants to run with me, I dont want her to do too much for someone of her age.

My question is, What is too much for someone of her age.

She managed the 2.3 miles at an easy pace.

As her body is still growing etc, I dont want to injure her joints or back etc.

I know some races are not open to juniors, is that just Marathons

I will be looking on the internet but if anyone has any thoughts or advice I would love to hear it.

Cheers

John

Hi john just read your message regarding advice for where the best place for your daughter to take up running for her age well with the utmost respect towards the striders she would be best starting at Sutton a.c. where she will be running with kids of her own age  have a word with Frank he will put you in the picture

"Sutton A.C.", wash your mouth out, may you be struck down for speaking of the "S" word on here.

Just joking, thanks for the advice, Im not sure how serious she is yet, I'll take her out a few more times and see if she's still keen. We've seen many a would be Strider disappear never to be seen again. I'll let you know, thinking about it she would be better with her own age group.

Cheers John S

Hi John, I was actually going to put what Dennis has said- she probably would be better joining an athletics club which caters for someone of her age. Once she is up and running (pun!) then I am sure she would be able to do a few sessions with us, but whilst she is young and as you say, growing, probably best to give her to the experts.

I think some half marathons ask you to be 16 years of age. Not sure about marathons. I am guessing she will probably start off doing cross country- 2-3 miles at a time.
