Thinking about Joining
Permalink

Hi all

I am thinking about joining. I am 46 and run 4 miles at a pace of 9:30. I am a bit
concerned that I would get left behind on the training runs. I am in the Great North Run in September and really need to step up training but struggling with motivation.

Can anyone tell me what the standard of runners are. Is there anyone in my age range or are they all younger.

Any advice would be helpful for me to decide.

Thanks

hello ! you spring chicken you !
the group is very mixed in age and abilty and we never leave anyone in training.
I did the GNR last year for the first time and the advice and extra training from other runners was great. come down on Monday and give us a try 7.00 at central fitness.
We do not have a run on wed as we have our AGM.

Hi

I toyed with the idea of joining a club for years. I eventually joined in Sept last year. Its so much better than running alone. Its the best thing I ever did, I only wish Id done it sooner, I also had the same concerns as you. Im 44 and the improvement Ive seen since Sept is fantastic, with all the varied types of runs we do, that you just wouldnt do on your own. All the people are very friendly, not too serious. You can push yourself as hard as you want and as Carol says we always regroup and allow everyone to catch up. Weve had a few new members in the last couple of weeks so youre in good company. From what you say your ability is more than good enough.
Get yourself down on Monday and give it a whirl you wont be expected to pay anything until youve been down a few times and are sure you like it.

Sorry for the lengthy reply but its all relevant stuff.

Hopefully see you soon

John

We meet at, or just before 7 and usually leave at about 5 or 10 past. You just go to reception and tell them youre here to join StHelens Striders, theyll let through the door, we congregate just through the next door by the squash courts.

See you tomorrow

John

Hiya - I'm 41 and just started running from scratch last October -  did my first run with the club last week and I am a beginner and very slow (I did my first 5k race for life yesterday and it took me 42mins) They are all age ranges and are very firendly and encouraging and dont make you feel like your holding the rest up or anything - the more new runners that join, the better, they are keen to adapt their schedule for all abilities I think, and I didnt get left behind because the lovely Frank kept me and another newbie motivated and doing as much as we could - It worked me much harder than I do on my own - I will be there tonight - though I know I wont be able to keep up with them at all I know it will improve my speed and fitness quicker - see you later - bernie

Hi everyone

Glad to see we have some more new members coming through the doors. We like to think that we are suitable for all ages and abilities- there are certainly no prerequisites for being a member. We have a training plan that we stick to, latest one should be online. From memory tonight is Victoria park so there will be lots of regrouping and support for newbies.

Be good to see you down. I have done GNR twice and the atmosphere is amazing!

Well done Mike, you seemed to cope with that without too much trouble.

Don't forget theres no proper training session on Wednesday because of the AGM, which incase youre wondering you are invited to. Its a very informal affair. You will meet all the other Striders and get to hear what the club plans are for the next 12 months and what people want from the club too. You may or may not want to contribute with some ideas of your own. A few of us are going for a short/easy run afterwards but I think most people arent but your quite welcome to join us if you wish.

If your not keen on the idea of either then we'll hopefully see you next Monday.

Cheers John
