Shin Problems
Permalink

Hi Guys

Im new to this forum,  Really having problems with my shins at the sides and lower half of the shin.  I can run  about 4 miles before the pain kicks in, but cant run for several days after.  I started running in april 2008, which included 5k through to half marathons and never suffered any pain at all.  I then stopped runnning in January of this year and started again roughly last month, im trying to achieve half marathon standard again but this shin problem is getting in the way of my training plan.  Do you think the pain is just weak calve muscles because i have not ran for a while or it is shin splints.  Any advice would be greatly received.

Cheers

Phil

Hi Phil,

It could be shinsplints or this could be caused by your running shoes so its worth checking them, they may have lost their bounce if they are quite old! a good stretch for preventing shin splints is to write letters of the alphabet with your big toe!! it stretches the front of your shin and helps, but you can get loads of advice from the runners world forum, I think rest  is the only cure for shin splints although we all know how hard that is to do!!hope you get better soon!

p.s it also could be over use if you have tried to start off where you left and done too many miles too quickly!! you could switch to some cross training in the interim to rebuild your fitness.

Hi Jo

Thanks for your reply. I have recently changed my running shoes only last month. I got a pair with more stability in them. I shall try them exercises you suggested and your right not being able to train is so frustrating especially when i have a training plan to stick too.

Thanks Rach, Just ran 5.5 miles without any problems. I done some extra stretches and ran a little easier, this seems to have helped. Thanks for the advice. I have just entered the Nottingham to Derby kilomathon next march so need to get in shape for tht. Just a little target i set myself smile.gif
