Has anyone suffered with IT Band syndrome (aka Runners knee). The pain starts about 2miles in and causes excruiating pain in the knee. Seen a physio who recommended stretches and Ice but does not hurt when walking or going upstairs. Have bought a PATT strap but cannot say it makes any difference, any thoughts on where to place it above/or below the knee? One thing that does help is elongating my stride when running, this must be something to do with the hip movement, but not sustainable as it is not my natural running style. Any advice would be gladly appreciated.
when i saw my physio she used to press very hard on the point of pain to the outside of my thigh, this was to release the pressure on the band and that really seemed to work for me, i wore the strap above my knee quite tight to give the same effect, my sister also does the same treatment as the physio and its called Quantum heat therapy, why dont you give her a call?? she has also done the same treatment on my shoulder/neck prob that ive had for over 12mths and subsequently im cancelling my hosp appointment with the musculo skeletal clinic as ive had nothing since and that was in June! worth a try, also you can use a foam roller to massage the it band and down the thigh, its a horrible pain i know but it will get better, she also recommended standing on 1 leg to strenghthen it and this i think helped to keep it at bay for me, you can also use a wobble board which really does strengthen. keep trying with the Patt strap, i think the rules to using it were if the pain is in the knee itself then wear below if its above i.e in the thigh almost but to the side, then wear above, if you remember it worked so well for me i wore it a year!!!! hope some of this helps and hope to see you soon x

Hi Carol- as you remember I had some knee problems a few years ago and I went to the Physio. I went there for 2 sessions and after that it was fine. He also gave me some stretches to do, which seem to do the trick. I can certainly send them to you. I was not allowed to run for 2 weeks so I guess some rest if required. I was the same though, walking was fine but running was impossible!

I would recommend finding an appropriate sport therapist to be correctly diagnosed. Ask for the cause to be treated not the symptom. If you have private treatment through work try and go down this route and push for a scan. It is easy to fall into the IBS trap being a runner. But there can be many causes to knee problem. Part being lack of muscular strength and ligament health, this can take a long time for a problem to develop. Pain is there for a reason, it is a message.
Hope it can be sorted quickly, But IBS can take up to a year or more to be treated and cured.
I would advise that you make an appointment with your GP and explain your symptoms. It is quite likely that he/she will refer you to a physio for assessment. I would not go to see a sports therapist as they tend not to treat the cause, but the pain, which will not cure your problem. Whilst, NHS physios will look at the basic mechanics of your movement (gait) and will take it from there.
