Hi all,

Started running a few weeks back after long layoff and went at it a bit hard, sure its a common mistake.  Anyway got myself a sore knee at the front, just below the kneecap which causes a sharp pain when going up or down stairs.  Have rested it for about 10 days now and used ice but it doesn't seem to be getting any better.  Any advice is welcome please!

Thanks,

Paddy cry

HI, the way you descibe the pain, it could be one of the bursae's under the kneecap and/or the patellar tendon ligament.  You could carry on with the ice treatment for a couple of days, which should be an ice cube massage or ice pack for 10minutes only every few hours.  Try and avoid anti inflammatories if you can.

You should also check your running shoes/gait to see if this has caused the problem but it is most likely as you said..an overuse injury.

If you can do some stretches and stengthening of the quad muscles this will also help a lot to support the knee and pevent injury.

If you think you would benefit from massage teatment which will help remove and re-model any healing scar tissue, relax the quads and hamstings and check the knee alignment, you can give me a call or text and book in..I only do home visits on a thurs/fri and some evenings.  I have some "free" appointments on a weds morning at the college clinic but the next available one I have is March 14th at 11.15am.

Hope this is helpful,

Bernie
