Am I too fat and slow to join

hi I have been cross training with a PT for 9 months I am doing well on the weights but am still classed as morbidly obese. I have lost 2 stone and would love to improve my running. My PT really pushes me on the treadmill but I find it very hard to maintain a 10 min mile pace for more than a couple of minutes. I can jogg v slowly at say 14 min mile for 40 mins. I would really like to get better so should I join or am I just too slow yet.

Hi Jenny
Thank you for posting on the wall, and first of all- well done for making such good progress. A few of the Striders have lost alot of weight so I am sure there is much respect for what you are achieving.

As a general rule, we ask that potential members can run 3 miles comfortably, which is probably more 10-12 minute pace. This is because our runs are at least 4 miles a session, and as much as 7 miles in an evening. With the cold winter nights drawing in, we try and come back before 8:30pm. Having said that, when people join us, they sometimes just meet us for the 'effort' part of the session. We meet at central fitness in St Helens and then run as a group to wherever we are heading (rainford bypass, east lancs etc). The benefit of this is that the run is shorter in length, but you are still getting the efforts in.

You are more than welcome to come down and try us out, or you can continue training and then try us again in a few months. Your P/T will be able to help you reach the running goal, and it sounds like you are more than on your way.

You may want to try running outside on your own too, I find it much easier and more enjoyable than on the treadmill. That way you can choose your pace as the route demands.

Sorry if this is a little vague! We will never say no to prospective members and it is great having a club where we all enjoy the same sport. I just wanted to give you a better idea of what we do so you can decide when you are ready to come down.
Hope to hear from you soon.
