I am asking has anybody else ever suffered from Achilles Tendinopathy .
I went out Sunday morning and did my long run (21 miles) after the first few miles I began to have pain and discomfort in my right heel but I carried on in the hope that I would run it off, I had a quick shower and went to work and every time I had to ascend or descend a staircase my foot was in severe pain after my shift was over I took a few ibrofuen and iced my heel which eased it quite well
Monday/Tuesday the pain got worse so today I reluctantly went to the doctors who diagnosed the above and told me to refrain from running for at least a week and possibly longer, I am fed up this is the 3rd time this training plan has been interrupted by injury and I cannot get my head around it as I have never really had an injury, I was going for a PB at Liverpool but I have now accepted that this will not happen and I have realised I will have to lower my expectations
The Doc stated possible causes
Inappropriate footwear- no
Poor running technique- never caused me a problem before
Training on hard or sloped surfaces- possibly
Increasing intensity of training- possibly
I think it could be related to the football I played last Friday ?
I have been given anti inflammatory and 4 different exercises I have to do a couple of times a day
Hello Gary. Sorry too hear about your injury but i,m sure that you will make a full recovery if you take things easy and don,t rush the healing process. But regarding the anti-inflams when i ruptured my achilles a few years ago the surgeon said that i should leave off them because they can be counter productive and stop the healing tissue from re-generating i hope that makes some sense .For the time being i would carry on with the RICE method or try using -two bowls of water 1 hot and 1cold 1min in each one a few times a day and i,m sure Bernie would take a look and give you better advice. i know youv,e worked for this one but there are plenty of other marathons to get your PB. Take care
Hiya Gary, Frank is right about the ant-inflamms, leave off them if you can because they do slow down the healing process, if u can rest it and massage the painful area with ice cubes for 10 minutes every 2hours (or as often as you can manage, for next 24hrs is important)...
Im emailing my mentor...Ray, he has many years of experience and will post as soon as I get his opinion...meantime, please rest and ice and i'll get back to you as soon as I can..
Thanks Frank and Bernie, foot feels 50% better today I spent most of last night rolling a freezing can of coke under the arch of my injured foot as advised yesterday by the Doc and it has really worked still quite tender and sore but hopefully this time next week I will be back out running I know I will have to give in to all the correct and valuable advice and cut right back on my mileage
If we are looking at Achilles Tendinopathy (Tendonitis) inflammation of the tendon, which manifests its self first as you would expect Pain, Swelling, (oedema), Heat, Redness, and possibly failure to move the ankle into dorsiflexion without some kind of discomfort.
The treatment is again as you would expect when treating inflammatory conditions. Ice, Rest Elevation and Rest, ice massage 3 to 4 ice cubes one after the other every two hours until inflammation resolves.
You must rest by reducing your mileage to a more realistic 5 miles as maintenance to reduce the friction of the tendon spindle (the inner part of the tendon) against the sheath (the outer part of the tendon otherwise the condition will get worse and the spindle will start to thicken and result in sticking and you will not be able to run at all without pain.
If you want to book in for a treatment I can help find out what the cause was/is and treat any scar tissue / relax the gastroc muscles ect as well as check you are doing the right type of stretch exercises.
Thanks Bernie the foot feels so much better I am going to wait until Tue/Weds at the earliest before I try the five mile run I have stopped taking the tablets as advised and no adverse reaction I will book in for an assessment but at the moment I am in the middle of a ten day shift pattern so okay if I contact you at end of next week via this forum
thats great if you can wait a couple of weeks - we are starting the clinic at college and i coul do an assessment there as a case study if you prefer - we have full facilities for carrying out gait analysis, gas analysis, plus all treatment techniques, ultrasound and such which i'm just dying to try out on someone ! I think there is a small charge this year of £10 for initial assessment and £5 for treatments but will confirm this.....apparently warrington college are charging £35 for their assessments so we are super value.
Let me know if you want to go on the client list....Bernie
I have just been and done a 7 mile slow run around Carr Mill Dam / Sankey Valley foot okay when running but sore heel again after shower I have iced it and took anti inflammatory tablet again, I would like to go on the client list Bernie just let me know when the college thing is up and running and I will book in
I just wanted to say a massive thanks to Bernie, after treatment and advice this morning at the new clinic (very impressive ) my foot is feeling lots better and I am looking forward to a run in the morning after taking the kids to school
already looking forward to next Weds for next treatment
shhhh.....what treatment ? the clinic isn't open yet....hahah...you're welcome, it was great for us all to diagnose it properly and prove once again that GP's are wonderful beings- but know very little about sports injuries...
looking forward to seeing your injury improve over next few weeks : )
It sure does Frank, and same goes for the therapist, the trainer ect too ? but GP's deal with "general" conditions, thats why they then refer ppl to physio's and hopefully in the future to Sports therapists because we are - like physiotherapists, training to become musculoskeletal specialists (which most GP's are not). Sports Therapy is a combination of Physiotherapy techniques but we are much more "hands on".
I'm really grateful to all the Striders who post questions and come to the clinic or book me for treatment because we've all learned so much about injuies and keeping them at bay .
