Time on your feet is the old way of thinking, training at or near the pace you want to complete it in seems to be the current way of thinking. So, if you want to do it in 5hrs, you need to be able to do your long runs at 11:26/mile pace. Use runners world smart coach :-

http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/racing/runners-world-smartcoach/3057.html

You can cheat and adjust the time of your 'recent race' so that the training pace towards the end of the programme is or is just under 11:26/mile pace. If you put in a 10k at 1hr. 1min it should be close.

It does mean that your longest training runs (20 mile) will be 3hrs45mins which is quite a long time.

Hope thats of some use.

John

Cheers john,, thats not far of what iam doing,, speaking to frank its a similar thing,, take your quickest 10k and add 3mins per mile,, 52 mins devided by 6.2= 8.33 per mile plus 3 mins =11.33 min miles so i shall continue at this pace and see how it goes!! Ta brunty

Time on your feet is still important- you will always run faster on race day, its natural to want to keep up with others in your pace group. I did my first 2 marathons just running 3 times a week, and I got round comfortably. I mean it was still hard work, but 3 runs was enough. I am aiming for 4 runs a week this time round to try and improve my time. I use smart coach and find it really useful to give you a rough plan. Try not to increase your mileage by more than 10% a week, and every 4th week have a rest run (so like 6-8 miles instead of 16-20). I did 3 20 milers and that was ok.

Just realised I didnt reply !! aww, yes as everyone says...and Tim Noakes "The Lore of Running" says its time on feet...and not necessarily running either....some ultra marathoner whose name escapes me...does a lot of his training by simply "walking" which I know is a swear word to some of you guys...but a real brisk walk is just as good as a run...and less impact on the joints xxxx
