Has anyone tried energy gels in a marathon. The fleetwood marathon ive entered is a small event and only mentions water stations. No mention of energy drinks.
I used 3 at London from mile 14 onwards thought they helped, they can be a bit sickly need to take water after, best thing is to buy just a couple for you long run as they are expensive, see if you like them not everybody does, experiment with other energy foods in your training you will find one that suits best.
John id posted on FB about this also, i have used them but find them ded sticky and a bit sickly, Jelly babies are your best, some have 1 for every mile, but you may need more, or haribo's!! they didnt have anything but little cups of water for white peak and you are better to plan to take your own , either bottle to carry throuout and you can refill it at water stations or carry sport in camel bak.

hello john used sis energy gels at blackpool marathon had six they are not as heavy as the lucazade gels they are very light when taking them and easy to swallow recomend them .
John, if you do decide to use them make sure you use them when you do your long slow distance runs. Don't use anything you are not used to on marathon day including unfamiliar energy drinks. Personally I never took to them.
John I am not a fan of the Gels I find them hard to digest whilst still running but thats not to say they will not work for you I will agree with Brian in that you must try them now and in next few weeks because it could spoil your marathon if you have a reaction to them on marathon day personally I think a sports drink before, halfway and at the end plus water say every 4/5 miles after halfway plus a mars bar and jelly babies after halfway usually works for me Happy experimenting
Thanks for all that info, I will try to digest it, ha, ha.
Think I'll give them a try during training, did a 12miler on Saturday, so hot, took one drink and wasnt nearly enough, mind you I'd lifted a load of paving in the morning/early afternoon and caught the sun on my back, so that probably didnt help. Managed the distance within training time goal so happy with that.
