hello just wandering as anybody got any tips on how to get rid of a heavy cold had bad head sore throat chesty cough.had it all week been taking medicine tablets try to sweat it out nothing working done no training just wandering would it be agood idea to go out for a run see if that works. getting worried cant get rid for next week any body got any tips thanks.

Hi Chrtis, wondered why I didnt see you down at the club last week.
The best advice I think anyone can give you is just to rest and take it easy. Drink lots of water, eat well (carbs), take lots of vitamin c (try tablets too as well as in fruit). Beechams flu plus tablets are also quite good for clearing up your head

I would try not to worry too much about running at the moment. From what I can gather, all the hard wrk for the marathon has already been done- these last few weeks/days are for rest and I dont think you will lose any fitness by not running. You dont want to go out running and make it worse. Best to conserve your energy and sleep lots.
You could always take the dog for a walk, you are still geting exercise but not putting any strain on yourself.

You have still got a week to go so dont panic too much!

        Hi Chris dont panic mate, Rach has given you some good
        advice, rest is important when you are not feling well, i have
        had a cold on me this week but not as bad as yours, squeeze
        some lemons, into a jug add some honey cover with boiled water,
        very tasty you should get a good sweat on.

HI Chris,

Add some whiskey or brandy to John's mix and you will definatly get a sweat on!! I echo what Rachel says, you wont loose any fitness by not training now, you will probably run your best race ever as a result of all the rest, although I know its hard to be so inactive after al the hard work, but if you dont rest you will only prolong it, best of luck!!!

Hi Chris

Best thng of all to take is paracetemol - as this combats fever - as well as the aches and pains - take the maximum dose in the time that they say ie 2 tabs per 4 hours. Taken with hot lemonade.

Also ask in boots they have a cold and flu treatment for 24 hours that has a good paracetemol and the fever ingredient (forget the name) but you take I think 6 tablets in the day and 2 different ones in the evening - so will make you sleep. Ask at the pharmacy counter - they will know exactely what I mean.

But if you cannot swallow without pain, have green phlegm and snot - this is an infection and you need antibiotics ASAP. If explain to DR - may give you good strength dose that works quick.
Wear layers and not be too hot by over dressing, so keep window open for fresh air.
Wash hands regular.
Chill out, do something you like as underlying stress will not help.

good luck for the weekend and most important thing is enjoy the event - do not be too caught up in times and targets.

running is not necessary at this time - it is all in your legs now.

Hi Chris,
The most important thing is DO NOT RUN IF IT IS IN YOUR CHEST. (you probably already know - better to be reminded than be sorry eh)
A rule of thumb is if it is a cold above the neck then OK - below the neck don't run.
I don't know what happens exactly, but some guys died on the Great North Run 2 or 3 years ago - they had
chest infections and "complications" (whatever those are !) set in and that was that.
Pity to not run after all the hard training but that happens - your turn will come.

Any training you do now will have a minimal effect on the marathon, it's the training you did last month and the month before that will count on the day.Don't panic, take it easy, don't run before you feel ready and let your body take care of the cold....

Apart from the usual sight of Big Ben and Cutty Sark that you will be able to see on Sunday, there is also the new craze of celebrity spotting!
I have been on the London Marathon website and looked up the list of celebs that are also going to be running on Sunday.

don't panic. As others have said you have done the hardest part and the milage is in your legs. Your body will look after the cold and doing more milage now will only hinder the recovery. I adapted my marathon training to ease down and do very little milage in the last 10 days and found it suited me better so don't worry about the miles.

If you do do the race then start slower than you intended and your spirit and confidence will be lifted as you continue to pass runners in the later stages. It is very easy to get carried along at too fast a pace by the occasion and reget it later in the race.

If the cold hasn't improved you should think seriously about picking another marathon in May or June.
